”To bloom is to open beyond an established form, to embrace vulnerability and possibility. It is not simply an image of beauty or abundance, but an act of becoming — one that may demand patience, intervention and the courage to imagine otherwise. The works in this exhibition remind us that making is a negotiation between human intention and material agency, between what we shape and what we must learn to allow.
We inherit a world in continual transformation, but we also participate in determining what comes next. In Bloom invites us to consider what we must nurture, what we must unlearn, and what we must change for life to flourish. For a moment, we are held within the fullness of the bloom: rooted in what has been, attentive to what is, and open to what might yet become.”
Tali Lehr-Sacks (Curator)
Bringing together a variety of contemporary South African artists and collectives working across a diverse range of natural materials and slow, hand-making processes, In Bloom explores the forces that shape our environments and the objects we make with and within them. Clay, wood and metal, paper, fibre and botanicals carry traces of their origins, the labour of their making, and the histories held within their forms. Through the hand, matter is transformed, yet something of its former life remains.
