Kaross is an Embroidery Collective started in 1989 in the Mopani district of the Limpopo province. While Kaross has been perfecting the craft of embroidery over the past 31 years, we created sustainable job opportunities in our area. Employing more than 1400 people and impacting the social landscape.
For the past 10 years we have been creating a limited edition VELD range of cushion covers, of which Kim Sacks Gallery has been our exclusive outlet in Johannesburg.
We have been interested in the abstract nature of the VELD that is surrounding us here in the Lowveld.
The VELD is instantly- and most affected by the abundance or the lack of rain. Every day. Even just a little bit of moistness in the air can effect the colour of the grass (VELD)
These burnt orange works for the BOTANICAL EXHIBITION are commentary to the dry veld at the end of a seven-year drought in Letsitele.
We are hoping for change and for the life giving power of rain at the end of this incredibly critical year 2020
We are in love with the realness of our existence and our dependence on the well being of the earth.
We are in Love with the abstract nature of VELD
These works are created in conversation between Somisa Baloyi and Irma van Rooyen
